GWB had a second term. Trump had a second term. I would find it reassuring to believe that democracies don't represent the "will of the people", but I've come to accept that, much of the time, the "the people" and I don't see eye to eye.
If access to information is a human right, as opposed to access to slop, then the best avenue to upholding it this decade is to block most of the internet.
It's beneficial, both practically and spiritually, to society if people can learn about the world around them. That is difficult using the internet we have now due to commercial slop, state-sponsored slop, populist slop, and AI slop.
That reads a little like the zeal of the convert. The US is still a more humane nation than most, though it's not immune to the diseases that come from being a great power.
I don't know about that. Honestly, idea of Americans self-ranking themselves as more humane is the kind of absurdity that lead us to where we are today. How many people making such claims have actually travelled to the nations they villainize?
For a long time I wanted to believe you, and in the past I'd have looked at work camps in China and said "thats bad". Now i look at the US prison industry and go "Is it really that different?". The examples don't end there...
Well, your thought process is "fine" we are still evil, but right now it's a matter of picking the least evil guys, and hoping they win.
I'm an American and sometimes I'm not sure which is the "least evil game here." Like, the Iranians and Russians are pretty evil, the IRGC killed a lot of people last winter and I'm friends with quite a few Ukrainians. But then also we have the ongoing insanity with ICE and the Epstein files...
The way I see it right now, we have "The Epstein Alliance" versus "The Axis of A-holes." Nobody involved in this is great, but I would rather live in America or the EU than Russia, or Iran.
To be fair, as an American, I don't know enough about what life is actually like in China to form an educated opinion? But by the sounds of it, they suck too.
My intuition is that this whole charade will come crashing down over the next few years as AI starts replacing more and more jobs.
We don't have to choose between a world without open source software or a world without privacy, but if we did, I'd enthusiastically choose the former.
I would normally also roll my eyes at "They hate us for our freedoms", but a couple passages of this letter reasonably could be paraphrased as "We hate you for your freedoms".
The paragraph beginning with "the worst civilization witnessed by the history of mankind" is a good example.
Apart from the references to Allah, that paragraph and the ones that follow are practically indistinguishable from the beliefs of many evangelical and conservative Christians, that America is an evil and secular empire corrupted by sin and vice that has turned away from God and His holy book. It just disagrees about which holy book.
And that aside, many of the criticisms of the US made there are valid. The United States is a deeply hypocritical culture, presenting itself to the world as a paragon of Christian virtue while being rife with racism, misogyny and failing to actually uphold Christian values (apart from some uniquely American strain of "Christianity" that considers capitalism a virtue but empathy a sin.) The US is a violent hegemonic empire that doesn't respect international law while claiming to be the world's moral leaders. The US has undermined democracies around the world while claiming to be "leaders of the free world." The US does do vast ecological damage to the world in the name of capitalism.
Granted, Bin Laden was a millionaire Saudi who funded mass murder so he was talking out of his ass on a lot of things (I wonder if the Koran has an equivalent to "take the plank out of your own eye before you complain about the speck in another's eye",) but he wasn't entirely wrong about the US. I wouldn't say the US is "the worst civilization witnessed by the history of mankind" but it probably would be in the top ten.

Seriously, has anyone ever argued that evangelicals and islamists would disagree about conservative ideas such as the role of sexuality or feminism in society? That sounds like a straw man among straw men.
If it is meant sincerely, it is the kind of idea that falls apart in the actual world - especially if someone wants to graduate with Honors in a degree program that requires higher maths.
That isn't to deny there is a lot of societal bullshit involving higher education, but that's true in many aspects of life.
