This is an old argument. Remember how all the billionaires were going to flee NYC if/when Mamdani was elected. And... then they didn't.

Well Mamdani's pied-a-tierre tax was specifically a real estate tax, levied on the real estate of people who don't have residency in the city. It's a marginal tax in the grand scheme of things, but unlike the billionaire wealth tax, it actually works, because the real estate can't move. And the owners can't just threaten to leave because they've already left, that's why the tax hits them.

Except that several billionaires have already left California, in anticipation of this law, as the article notes.

He also hasn't really done anything. Mostly because he made a bunch of promises to do things he doesn't have the authority to do.

Hand movements are fine, but the comment is right that these come off as incredibly fake.

Very cool, but yes, the form factor, which is the most crucial point, seems off.

Revenue is up massively, so we'll be getting rid of the people that helped that happen. Genius move.

This is a common strategy nowadays. Not sure of the rationale

I thought it was common knowledge that

1) there was a hiring glut during COVID-19 for SWEs [0] that is now seen as a period of overhiring

2) private equity and larger institutional shareholders are seeing their commercial property investments bleed out [1]. research points to increased (or at least not diminished) efficacy of being fully remote [2] so there's obviously a trade-off that's pushing companies to assume that risk and personally I'm not convinced that it's due to the anti-social desire by execs for high-control alone

The least cynical take I've heard about RTO is that most managers are deeply under-trained to the point of being mostly incompetent. So forcing people into the office lets them do performative performance monitoring and project management. This makes their job "easier" in that they didn't know how to do it correctly in the first place.

Most managers aren't trained at all, and there's a massive shortage of good ones.

I would contend most corporations have a lot more managers than is necessary.

It appears that the Uber executive team agrees with you!

Then the best people quit on a random Tuesday and we have all hands on why managers cannot retain top talent.

Nobody believes a single promise of a company anymore. That promo promise after a hard assignment? Yeah fuck that.

There's a CNN article that has some expert quotes for context, but isn't quite as in depth as the study itself: https://archive.ph/yBiM8

Am I misunderstanding their current finances? On yahoo finance, I don't see net negative income for ESTC.

Looking at a few retailers, it seems like prices haven't increased yet. Maybe in a few days?

Impulse bought a Pro with 48Gb ram on a retailer with old prices

Was waiting for the next generation but I think I will sit it out

Same here, reserved a 48GB M5 Pro shortly after seeing the news, and now I see the same retailer raised the price by over $1000. If they honor the sale, then this will be the most short term value I've gotten out of an HN submission ever.

Same here. Buy now ask questions later. Pretty sure the shop where I bought it will happily cancel the order if I give the cancel order.

Oled laptop will have to wait a few years now.

Had a Pro 48GB in my Amazon cart at ~$4k CAD, now it's ~$1k higher

Bummer

Pushed me to buy a Macbook Air in Costco today. I was on the fence for replacing my really old MBP for a while.

This list includes some things that were killed then brought back. Seems unfair.

Very cool project!

Sounds like the Slate truck.

Nice that looks pretty cool! Maybe once they become a real product I’ll look into it haha.
