I have an anecdote about compressed data.

When I studied at school, I used ZFS with lz4 enabled on my working machine. During that times I had a task of parsing Wikipedia's data. I had enough brain cells to find compressed dumps and download them with aria2 but not enough to leave the file compressed. I ran a decompressor. It'd been taking longer than I expected so I went out to walk a dog.

Imagine how fast me and the dog ran back 30 minutes later when I realized how cooked I was. I only had 10 GB left on my disks after I downloaded that 20 GB file. This decompressed file would have blown the machine up. I was terrified to find a frozen system with no storage space left.

Instead, the process finished and `df -h` reported 8 GB of the free space left. Files were decompressed. I could `less` them! That made no sense! Only many many minutes later I finally figured out to run a `zfs get compressratio` command which showed ZFS successfully and transparently recompressed everything on the fly. That was too impressive for that teenager and he never switched to a different file system.


Solaris has had so many cool features, like ZFS or doors. What I liked about ZFS is you coul make snapshot, which is basically the solution to how to treat data files a single, cheap to access unit, yet still use standard apis for file management, great for containerizing apps, making copies for experiments, or shipping stuff. Node.js just received this as a bespoke, app-level feature. But these things are too many to count, and make a ton of sense if you know how filesystems actually work. useful Also copy-on-write, temp overlays.

Sun was a really cool company.

I use KOReader a lot. After your comment, I realized file browser annoys me too. After some searching, I found an alternative view. Turns out, you can open the File browser tab, swipe down and switch "Display mode" to "Mosaic with cover images". Also seems like it's default for new versions now. This mosaic view still uses directories but it lists books as rectangles (covers) instead of lines (covers + titles), it seems more pleasant.

By the way, in the same settings I finally found how to set up KOReader to launch with a previously opened book. What a relief!


Thanks for mentioning GrapheneOS. I'll just explain to others what "pretty trivially" means here. GrapheneOS adds a huge checkmark "Network access?" when you install an app. It's impossible to miss.


The problem is the yes/no options - I want to give access to specific endpoints - but now that’s “all of Cloudflare for everything” which means the web entire.

It used to be you could let Onkyo App™ access the five IPs for onkyo.com and be done with it.


What's next!? Let Claude analyse clinic visits!? Oh well...


10 months ago I've built a Raspberry Pi 5 mini NAS with 3 SSDs connected through RADXA Penta Hat. It runs OpenMediaVault, system is on the SDcard, other data are on the SSD ZFS pool. I have autosnapshots enabled, and I tune compression methods on specific datasets (lz4 for almost everything, zstd for file backups).

We use it for storing (backups, media files), playing (PaperMC), and watching (Jellyfin). I can only complain about the lack of hardware decoding in Raspberry Pi 5. Jellyfin loads CPU much if I enable transcoding so it's always disabled. If I knew this, I'd consider a cheaper and faster, but less popular, RADXA machine. Storage is fast enough for me, rsync and Samba speeds are usually limited by my network. PaperMC also runs without a hitch, thanks for asking!

As I didn't have high requirements for the machine, I also considered USB Bays at first but they wouldn't go well with ZFS.

I get the impression that they don't actively manufacture Pi Zero W anymore and it's all old stock. Rapid for example say they have an availability of 761 (at time of writing) [1], but are those all within Rapid's control, or what is reported at Raspberry Pi's remaining stock? If you sell 1k printer units, can you put a Pi Zero W in all of them?

Compute modules are probably a bit more reliable and there is some capability with other modules, specifically the DDR2 form factor ones [2] (which is my favorite form factor). For example, ClockWork sold their own compatible compute modules [3].

I skimmed through Livio web-site and it seems like it's just a repacked wiktionary?

On my e-book I use KOReader and I uploaded dictionaries of my personal choice on it. When I see a new word, I hold a finger for a bit longer than usual and KOReader opens a modal window with a definition from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. It took some time to find a DRM-free version and convert it into StarDict format but I've done it so I can share you only need to use this Python script: https://github.com/ilius/pyglossary. I'm sure there's already a wiktionary stardict on the web and you won't need pyglossary.

KOReader can be installed on many popular e-readers, including jailbroken Kindles (this usually takes 10 minutes to do depending on Amazon mood).
