No no no that's too reductive - instead, they transition all data through a transformer using SOTA systems to launder away technical, legal and interpersonal concerns before a stochastic output is dynamically placed in a predetermined location.
This is a very high level and high velocity process, so meatspace thinkers sometimes have trouble understanding some of the intracacies. Ask Claude to explain the process or make you a Mermaid graph to help.
As someone making mobile apps used by billions, demands from mobile users certainly grow and want this class of hardware capability. We spend significant effort trying to figure out how to deliver features asked for by our users for high end phones and cutting edge hardware, while not alienating the wider user base without these capabilities. Competitors do exactly the same.
This is probably not about "mobile users" as in Android Phones & iPhone users .. but about the current (trendy) rise of handheld consoles ? Atleast that's what I think
the switch, steam deck and competitors will likely look into ARM, the cheaper ones already use it, flagship and gaming phones, the latter is bigger than you think, normal mobile gaming is big in third world countries and china, and emulation continuous to get better, I can ToTK and The Witcher 3 (windows version) on my phone, and it's a few years old flagship
The thing that doesn't get written about is that precisely the same situation occurs for women. Decentering men is equivalent to MGTOW. The torrent of misandrist content on social media utterly dwarfs the amount of 'red pill' / manosphere or similar content. It's mainstream in a way outright misogynistic content hasn't been for decades. Worse still, it's almost impossible to have this discussion without the immediate repost of 'but actually men are terrible', or some other such nonsense.
There's a very old fashioned 'battle of the sexes' being pushed by algorithmic content, and it's having visible toxic effects on the capacity of people to socialise, form relationships, engage in social reproduction and function normally in society. There's a vast torrent of such poison aimed at both men and women. Pretending it's only occurring to men, or that only men are being radicalised, is refusing to engage with the problem.
The comments section of literally every mainstream video on instagram reels, tiktok and the like that in any way touches on gender, masculinity, femininity etc - isn't dominated by misogynistic comments and hasn't been for years. But rather thousands of 'not all men, but always a man', 'yaas goddess', 'men aren't lonely enough', and countless other shibboleths.
The normalisation of FLINTA only spaces (and accommodation) and the like offline has brought these dynamics into the real world in ways that further isolate and dehumanise.
This has always been my issue with these causes that claim to promote equality. If your way of promoting equality and inclusion excludes a whole gender, you're doing something wrong.
I don't see much issue with FLINTA spaces, other than it still failing at the ye old question "how to easily filter bad people from people". The options for regular spaces are still HUGE, some people deciding to have FLINTA and apparently enjoying themselves is a plus.
Having lived in Berlin, FLINTA only apartments are a significant minority (up to half) of spaces seeking housemates through publicaly available groups on platforms like Facebook (as opposed to websites like WG-Gesucht). So there's quite a significant material impact. Living in Ireland currently, more and more arts workshops, funding opportunities, arts mixers and the like are FLINTA only or FLINTA preferred (terminology can differ). Ditto club nights, but that's whatever. This is a real and growing issue if you're not a member of the approved groups, but have to function in those environments.
The idea of decentering men and the manosphere are so wildly different in goal, tone, and motivation that I can't seriously believe you think they're equivalent. Nevermind the vast over-inflation of your perceived "torrent" of this content
The fact that you can't perceive the equivalence is instructive. Group A generalises individual issues with members of Group B and forms an ideology of blame and exclusion. But Group B was evil all along, cry Group A. Group B have become deranged cry Group A. And so it goes.
I was a teenage boy in the 90s and "girls are stupid" is definitely not a Tik Tok original. Yeah, yeah, scale matters but this is not in fact the first generation to discover sex differences or vices.
You are massively underrepresenting the situation. This is not “girls have cooties”, this is full-on women bashing. This is calling all women subhuman whores who don’t deserve respect. For crying out loud, there are massive “influencers” out there whose whole job is to degrade women online. You might’ve heard of a couple of wildly popular brothers who have just been arrested for literal human trafficking who forced women to be cam girls while making money publicly bragging about it, and those guys are (again, publicly) connected to the president of the USA.
Let’s please not pretend this is even comparable to the 90s. Scale is a quality of its own, and the scale of the current situation, both in severity and reach, is very different.
Yeah, it has gone further. You wouldn't hear "kill all men" at a uni in the 90s either. But I am not convinced that this is social media because hardline feminism predates it significantly.
But could it be that formerly unrealistic levels of exposure has normalised these things that always existed, and now they are mainstream and affecting kids __due to social media__ ?
Bingo. And algorithmic social media feeds reward fringe opinions—the more hateful the better—because those drive “engagement” which translates to attention, fame, money. Which means people are incentivised to be as controversial as possible. They don’t even have to fully believe what they preach, they just have to ensure they can enrage a large enough number of people. Which in turn brings the people who really believe those things out of the woodwork and the slime ball of hate gets bigger and rolls faster.
Social media as a technology isn’t necessarily the root cause of all those problems. But it is the medium by which those were allowed and incentivised to proliferate at an ever increasing pace.
"The Albanese Government is taking the next step following its world leading social media age ban to ensure Australians have more choice online...." - Me thinking "What the heck? What Albanese government has to do with Australians? Are they under the occupation? Albanian occupation?!"
For Firefox I recommend Cookie AutoDelete 3.8.2 addon. It is possible to configure it to erase all storage (cookies, indexeddb, localSorage and others) after chosen time (default 15s) after changing/leaving domain. It has many other useful options.
Another good addon is ClearURLs 1.27.3 which clears suspicious parameters of query strings on everything what's loaded by page. It sometimes break sites.
I don't understand why author complains about Firefox performance. I use it everyday on laptop and mobile and I don't see the difference to the Chrome or Brave when I visit all my regular sites and all other I find on HN.
She has to play HTML 5 games or something to observe such difference
I'm a former Mozillian and a lifelong Firefox user (continuously since Firefox has existed, at least). I know Firefox is slower. I can feel it and have felt it on every system I've ever owned, and am constantly reminded once every few months or weeks or so when I open up Chrome to check something and am confronted with how much snappier it is—even without an ad blocker, which I don't have installed because I don't actually use Chrome.
I know all this and I use Firefox anyway because I don't care.
What I don't do is go online and comment about how there's no difference when there is clearly a difference. Pretending things are otherwise comes across as some form of denial or delusion.
There should be influencers or agitators (as named correctly) to tell general public what distro to install, what server to buy and how block tracking and ads
