My understanding from articles, they had scientists hard at work trying to get their machine to work and the issues that were essentially maintenance (you really couldn’t have a testing machine like this that didn’t require expensive / regular maintenance as promised). The amount of blood wasn’t really even addressed yet and they faked results in house using competitors machines.
In house teams were not optimistic, but they got paid to experiment and try so they did.
I’ve had “Boss I can fix this in one line of code.” situations, but nobody of 6 people wanted to make the call despite involving themselves excessively.
So nothing got done.
So the temperature on the issue went up.
So management whose failure was their own could only think of engaging more managers and processes….
Never ended.
I work at small companies now, less money but I enjoy it more. I just fix things and everyone is happy.
We have been building them for decades without problems at the scale we’re talking about them now.
There’s a few in my area that have huge green space around them as per local government and I’d love to live near them…. You got big open green space, trees, wetlands. One I know of is home to Sandhill cranes every summer.
I’ve had more than one client tell me they want to collect drivers license images for various reasons.
Somewhere in the inane executive brain world there are some folks who seem to see some unspecified value in collecting driver’s license images. They never have given me a sensible justification. They seemed to think it provided some assurance that the providing it is in fact who they really are and they can validate…. something.
I’ve managed to push back on that and told them I didn’t want the legal responsibility of managing such data and tracking all the legal responsibilities for any number of countries and ect.
It doesn’t surprise me that there is a ready made service to bypass this kind of absurd requirement.
A professor at a vocational training degree shared us a VM for a class project. Filled with dozens of porn bookmarks. He eventually realised and stayed after class to delete the VM from every class computer, deleting all the work of classmates who didn't take a backup home.
This prompted the people who lost their work to actually report the porn in revenge.
> Another turned his computer that “wouldn’t behave” into IT, full of porn.
Every tech support worker has seen this countless times. So many people are completely blind to the idea that turning your device over to support means support can actually see what’s on your device…
Yeah I’m inclined to agree. Even with choices of services and their choices on the internet… it’s just not a priority for most users in a way that matters.
In house teams were not optimistic, but they got paid to experiment and try so they did.
