Facebook/Google have a history of abusing hidden iOS APIs and exploiting weaknesses in the app isolation. It's plausible they found a way to read the output stream of the text-to-speech module from their apps, until Apple was forced to fix it.

None of the companies would have an incentive to report it.

Imagine you work in a three letter agency and discover that a certain guy has a vital role in an issue you are investigating. You don't want to just bug his iPhone from now on, you want to know everything he said over the past two years when around his iPhone.

The tech is already included in the iPhone, and storage requirements are in the hundreds of Megabytes, not more. The device is a black box on purpose, and my informed opinion is that they have been logging the ambient text-to-speech since a long time.

At its core it has striking similarities with a freeze response, which is overcome by increasing heart rate (e.g. stimulants, exercise, temperature shock). Big overlap with CPTSD symptoms as well.

After recent US shenanigans why would you spend effort to migrate to yet another Five Eyes controlled service, especially if they do the full "privacy from Germany" circus.

What kind of security threat does a migration to such a service actually mitigate?

If they were truly a "sovereign EU" kind of project then they'd be on .eu domain, not have security advisors from Virginia, and so on.

Nevertheless it's good to see that the decoupling-from-your-allies movement that US citizens have initiated is so scary that they have to set up these kind of fake EU alternatives with some local figureheads.

I wonder how the Google Search page traffic has been affected by the recent AI surge.

Very anecdotally, of course, but in my social circle (middle-class urban Romanians in their late 30s and early 40s) almost everyone I know has replaced a phrase like "I googled it and I found this and this and this" to "I chatGPT-ed and I found this and this and this" (where "chatGPT" can also be sometimes replaced by Claude and, not that often, by Gemini).
